the—doldrums:

just submitted this TFiOS inspired plushie for the P4A nerdfighter art tier. it took me ~7 hours to make (it was completely sewn by hand; not on a sewing machine) and i’m absolutely thrilled with the outcome. TFiOS holds a very special place in my heart and i felt that this would be a really awesome way for me to express that.

good luck to all of the other nerdfighters out there submitting your awesome works of art!

oh and…DFTBA!

Adorable!

Project for Awesome Nerdfighter Music Compilation!

Hey nerdfighters. As you know, the Project for Awesome is coming up (on December 17th!) and we at vlogbrothers headquarters are working very hard to make sure this year’s P4A is a great one.

This year, we would like to include a new kind of perk, kind of like the Nerdfighter Art perk, but with music!

We are looking for any and all songs by nerdfighters, about nerdfighteria. These songs will be collected and formatted into a compilation album (or compilation albumS, depending on how many submissions come in) that will be available for purchase as a downloadable perk as part of the Project for Awesome Indiegogo campaign. Money will be raised for charity. People will be able to acquire lots of great nerdfighter music. Super cool stuff.

Read on for submission guidelines and the like.

  • All songs must be either about nerdfighteria, about any/all of John’s books, or covers of Hank’s songs.
  • Artist name & song title must be included with your submission. You may also include a link to your music on the web (bandcamp, itunes, etc), and any other text about the song you like.
  • Songs must be submitted in as high a quality as possible; lossless files (AIFF, WAV) are preferred.
  • Submit all songs via wetransfer to valerie@nerdfighteria.com with “P4A MUSIC” included somewhere in the message.
  • Submissions will be accepted until November 1st, 2014.
  • Multiple submissions are very much allowed, but please send them in one at a time!
  • We will reach out to those whose songs are selected for the compilation to confirm their inclusion no later than December 1st.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me at valerie@nerdfighteria.com. We’re very excited to listen to all the lovely things you make!

DFTBA

I finished my first nerdfighter art piece for the Project for Awesome. (sorry this pic is terrible) If you want to donate 15 pieces to the P4A email nerdfighterart@gmail.com by October 10th and send a sample picture of something you’d like to contribute. #p4a

Ed-ingle, consistently the best. You can get all the information about creating P4A art perks here.

Hello there, artists of nerdfighteria! After the success of the Nerdfighter Art Tier of last year’s Project for Awesome, I’m teaming up with the P4A team once again and need your help!
The P4A, as always, will be raising money to give to charities. However, some people have more time and talent to give than money (you know who you are) so we’d like to recruit you to provide creations for reward tiers in our IndieGoGo campaign. You create the artwork and it will be and sent to a fellow nerdfighter who claims the perk!
Ideally, you will be making 15+ items and you will be shipping them to Missoula, Montana to be distributed to the people who claimed the Nerdfighter Art Perk!
We’re looking for small, easily shipped items. This can include jewelry, knitwear, small plushies, small drawings and paintings, digital art prints, etc.
The pieces of art do not need to be nerdfighter-themed but it is highly encouraged!
The estimated worth of the art should be about $25-30 because the perk will be sold for $40. That’s not a strict amount, just keep it in mind when making your proposals!
If you’re interested, you need to email us at nerdfighterart@gmail.com by October 10th with an example of what you have/will be creating and what quantity. A picture of it for us to see would be extra helpful when sorting through everyone’s submissions!
We will let you know if it’s reasonable and provide additional information around October 13th, giving you more than a month to complete your pieces.
We’re extremely excited to be working on this project again this year, we hope you’re excited too! ^-^

If you’re a creative type, the Project for Awesome could use your craftiness!

Having a hard time keeping track of how many schools Nerdfighters have helped in Bangladesh? Here’s a list.

  • In 2008, based on your votes, Nerdfighters funded repairs of a school damaged by Cyclone Sidr. Walls were rebuilt, ceilings were anchored, and benches and podiums (made by villagers - including some of the teachers themselves) were provided. You can watch the video of that here. Funding Source: Donations to Uncultured.com. Implemented by: Save the Children. Current Status: Running.
  • In 2009, based on your feedback on Twitter, Nerdfighters funded the donation of school uniforms and school supplies to a Buddhist boys hostel in Dhaka City. Pens, paper, and uniforms were given. Money allotted was over-budget and extra funds were used to buy sports equipment for children. You can watch the video of that here. Funding Source: Donations to Uncultured.com (additional in-kind donations by Vestergaard-Frandsen). Implemented by: School Administration of Dharmarajika High School under permission of the Venerable of the Dharmarajika Monastery. Current Status: Supplies Used/Finished.
  • In January 2014, The Good Shepard School was created. This is a free-of-cost school serving about 30 slum kids. Nerdfighters are paying for the rental space for the school, the teachers’ salaries, snacks for the kids, and school supplies. This includes stuff like backpacks and (hopefully soon) benches for the kids to sit on. Funding Source: The Project for Awesome’s Winnings Designated to The Uncultured Project. Implemented by: The Good Shepard Project (with assistance from The Holy Cross Congregation). Current Status: 50% of Funding Spent, 6 Months of Funding Remain.
  • On my birthday, I announced construction of a nursery school in southern Bangladesh. This will be in a Catholic ghetto referred to as “Colony 4”. Name of the school to be determined later. Funding Source:  The Project for Awesome’s Winnings Designated to The Uncultured Project. Implemented by: The Catholic Church (with assistance from The Holy Cross Congregation). Current Status: Construction Commenced by Currently Halted Due to Monsoon Rains.

I’d like to stress that The Uncultured Project is not a charity or NGO. It’s just me and a group of friends crowdfunding to do charitable projects. I don’t take a cut for my own salary. Funding for equipment (like this laptop I’m typing on) comes from a separate equipment fund you can donate to.

I’m also very lucky that, in all the above cases, the partners that worked with me agreed to spend 100% of the money on helping the poor and did not use this money for their overhead, salaries, etc.,. Not that such costs aren’t important but, especially in an NGO-skeptical country like Bangladesh, I really felt it was important to do these projects in this way.

The wonderful people at mental_floss are putting on a Trivia Show night in New York, with all proceeds going to the Project for Awesome! How cool is that?

The New York event is May 14th at the Flatiron Room, and tickets (available here) are $15 (this includes admittance to the show, a drink, hors d’oeuvres, and chances to win rad prizes). Grab your friends, head on down, and have a great night of fun & weirdness, all for a good cause. Note that the New York event is 21+ (as it’s in a bar).

More information regarding additional Trivia Show nights in Chicago and San Francisco is forthcoming; see here for details.

Trivia and decreasing worldsuck: what could be better?!

PUFF LEVELS ARE HIGH, but the cause is pure excitement!
I received today my P4A perk today, my/John’s shirt! You can’t see the whole certificate because I’m poop at taking photos, but oh well. I’m torn between wanting to wear it every day and never ever touching it again. I guess I’ll put it on for special occasions. Or I might start a “John shirt around the world” tag; I’d obviously start with the Guggenheim museum, since it’s in Bilbao, my hometown, and I reckon it is a place John (and specially Sarah) would like to visit but probably won’t anytime soon…
