Day 42: Hank Green- This Is Not Harry Potter
"I always kind of felt that was a problem with Harry Potter. There are people in the world who need help, and wizards and witches can provide that help, and they’re not because they are trying to maintain their secrecy. So, the tattoo I’m getting in January, originally started as a silly Idea of me saying “I should get ‘DFTBA’ Tattooed somewhere on my body” and eventually evolved into me saying “When Can I get ‘DFTBA’ Tattooed on my arm?! I WANT MONEY! I AM A GIANT SQUID OF ANGER!!”
The Idea evolved from just ‘DFTBA’ in plain, boring text, to victorian text, gothic text, vampiric text, and eventually to the First picture above.
I loved this design so much, but the more I looked at it, the more flaws I found with it, and so I changed the design and spacing a bit and ended up with the second picture, which is the design I’m going for.
There’s a back story to each element of the Tattoo.
First off, ‘DFTBA’ Stands for: “Don’t Forget To Be Awesome”, which is a phrase created by John and Hank Green and adopted by Nerdfighters everywhere. The vlogbrothers and Nerdfighteria have been a huge part of my life since 2007, John’s books changed my views and introduced me to so many new things, Hank’s songs taught me more than most of my classes ever could, and together, they’ve shown me that despite the fact that the internet, no matter how advanced it becomes, cannot bridge the oceans between us, it certainly helps.
The reason It’s in Harry Potter text is because, Harry Potter has been the single biggest influence in my life, I’ve been reading the books since the first one was released in 1997, and I was a massive potterhead right from the start. The books were massive influences on who I am today, and I know I would be a totally different person had I not read them. The tattoo is a symbol of my love of not only the series, but also of the magic that Jo Rowling has brought to my, and millions of others’ hearts.
