(Note: I wrote this up for my personal blog but thought I’d submit it here so some nerdfighters might actually see it).
Story time!
Back when Paper Towns was about to be released, a few of nerdfighters made threads on the Ning about how they had found advanced copies of it in random bookstores. One day, I was in Barnes and Noble, so I checked the YA section, thinking: “there’s no way it’ll be there, but it’d be so cool if it was!” I got to John’s section, and there, staring up at me, was Happy Margo. I spent the next few minutes switching between shock and joy, doing odd little dances and probably confusing a few Barnes and Noble patrons. Clinging to the book, I quickly walked to the register, dreading the moment when the cashier would look at the book and say “Oh I’m sorry, this isn’t supposed to be for sale yet, I’ll have to take it back.” Luckily he didn’t, and I ran to my car to call my friend who was not as excited as me but still pretty excited. Then I ran home and began reading, evilly snickering to myself because I was getting to read it before it was released.
Hold on, I got sidetracked. The point of this story was that tucked inside the book I found ^this^ letter. And I read it. And I loved it. Can’t you just hear John’s voice reading it? That was 100% him writing, not some generic stand-by letter that all writers use. I love it. Now, years later, I refound this letter, still tucked inside my copy of Paper Towns, waiting for me. So I thought I should share this magic with the internet, and what better way than through Tumblr?
(A few weeks after getting this, I saw him at an event, and I wanted to ask him to sign it but in the end chickened out because of some irrational fear that he’d be mad at me for having this letter. (In my head Imaginary John says something like “This is only for the eyes of Barnes and Nobleans! Not for you! You are no longer a nerdfighter!” and I just start crying)).
So yeah, here’s a photo so that you too may read the magic of John’s weird amazing stunninglygorgeous letter. (He even signed it best wishes!)
